WR Johnnie Dixon Is A Tryout Player At Browns Minicamp

At the Cleveland Browns rookie minicamp over the weekend, three tryout players were in attendance.

This is a scaled down version of pre-COVID-19 rookie minicamps where a dozen or more players would be invited for a tryout.

With an offseason free agency and draft period focused on improving the defense, the three tryout players are offensive players.

They are:

Johnnie Dixon is an interesting player who despite being a 2019 UDFA has yet to play a snap in a regular season NFL game.

Dixon was a five-year player at Ohio State from 2014-2018.

His best season was in 2018; however, his career stats are admirable.

Dixon caught 67 passes for 1,146 yards and 16 touchdowns as an Ohio State Buckeye.

Though undrafted in 2019, he was signed by the Houston Texans.

He caught 9 passes for 77 yards for the Texans during the 2019 preseason.

After being cut by the Texans, he signed with the Arizona Cardinals as a member of the 2019 practice squad.

Injuries hindered him during his time with the Cardinals (abdomen and hamstring) so he was waived by the Cardinals in September 2020.

The 26-year-old is small by NFL standards measuring 5’11” tall and weighing 198 pounds.

He does have speed evidenced by his 4.41 40 at the 2019 NFL Combine.

With Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry, Rashard Higgins, KhaDarel Hodge, Donovan Peoples-Jones, and JoJo Natson already on the roster and with rookie draft pick Anthony Schwartz aiming for a spot, it does make the wide receiver room in Cleveland crowded.

In the second year of Coach Stefanski’s offense, he could be aiming to add depth and more speed to keep opposing defenses guessing.

It is also possible that if Dixon makes the team, he could be used for special teams purposes.
