The Cleveland Browns failed to replicate their success from the 2023 season in 2024.
A lot of that had to do with subpar quarterback play, but the offensive line didn’t give Deshaun Watson or Jameis Winston much of a chance, either.
Letting Bill Callahan go to join his son Brian with the Tennessee Titans came back to haunt this team right away, as Andy Dickerson was never able to turn the corner and get the offensive line back on track.
That’s why team insider Tony Grossi believes that even though they’ve only added veteran backups and depth pieces, replacing Dickerson with Mike Bloomgren is more than enough to bolster the offensive line and make it the strongest current position group:
“One of the first things the Browns did after the 3-14 season in 2024 was replace offensive line coach Andy Dickerson with Mike Bloomgren, a former colleague of Browns legendary line coach Bill Callahan. The Browns return four of their five starters from last year and added veteran backups Cornelius Lucas and Teven Jenkins. These changes more than likely restore the offensive line as the Browns’ strongest position group,” Grossi wrote.
That makes some sense, as the team literally added a former head coach to be in charge of that unit.
He’s clearly overqualified for the job, and his past relationship with Coach Callahan means that the team will go back to his scheming.
Callahan is the best offensive line coach in the game, and he was a master of patching things and making sure that whoever was asked to play rose to the occasion.
That wasn’t the case at all last season, but it’s not like some of those players forgot how to do their jobs all of a sudden.
The Browns need to add more youth to that unit and think about the future, but with some improved coaching, there’s no reason to believe they can’t get back to their dominant ways.
